So, the last few months have been beyond insane: After all, I am now an official college student! And, legit, its been only college, college, college. Honestly, my life is becoming a broken record player. Don't get me wrong—I seriously LOVE my school. It's been...let's see...the yin to my yang. And, no matter how cheesy that last phrase was, it's true!!!! And, especially applicable to this piece on the Dalai Lama!
Hey! 1 Comment ![]() Oh! When the skies are grey, poets... I love subtitles. I think you love subtitles. They help us understand when we cannot hear. Except when they're a mess...poor spelling...poor placement...
My mom always loves to tell the story of how at the age of 6, during a cooking segment on an episode of Martha Stewart's Living, I asked her why Martha was cooking with "flowers." I had no idea that there was a misspelling in the captions—it was supposed to say "flour." I truly believed that Martha was using tulips and roses to make whatever delicious delicacy she was making. This story speaks to one negative impact of poor subtitles: they create a generation of kids who are just learning to spell and read that don't know how to spell. A generation that believes "flour" is "flower." But there is another negative aspect of poorly-spelt,-placed subtitles (besides making characters on TV look decapitated when the captions cover their faces). Any guesses as to what it is??? Wanna try again? Well, it can make the individuals, like Karl Lagerfeld, on whatever the clip is seem really stupid. And such was the Youtube-Posted interview with Karl Lagerfeld... Hey! So this term, I am taking a great English course at school: Medieval Literature. I am loving it; how could you not with all of the errant knights, dragons and kings? Well, today we began watching Monty Python's Holy Grail, a satire on medieval stories. Well, my teacher turned on the subtitles so that I could follow the movie. Imagine my suprise when is see, "Røsten nik Akten Di." Trust me I was confused until I realized that this was part of the Monty Python gimmick. It's funny, but is confusing for watchers who are deaf/hoh. There should be a note on the cover box. Watch the clip above! Enjoy! bf4life-hearing Do you always have to fight people to have the captions on the TV turned on? Do you have a perfectly crafted argument of why captions are the most essential things on Earth? How--even though they block the actors' eyes--one should use captions? Well, if so, I have another piece of supporting evidence to add to your argument. Your captions can help rid the world of overexposed celebrities and issues...
Hey!
The day that all football fans (including my brother, who has taken up the television for the entire football season!!!) have been waiting for is tonight! The all-American tradition of the Super Bowl is finally here for its XLV game! The Super Bowl, which is the championship game of the National Football League (NFL), first took place on January 15, 1967 when the NFL's Green Bay Packers defeated the AFL's (American Football League) Kansas City Chiefs. For a long time, the NFL and AFL were bitter rivals, who were constantly competing with each other. In order to end the feud, the two leagues decided to merge together as a single league. In 1967, as part of the merger agreement, the two leagues created a game where the champions of both leagues would compete against each other in an AFL–NFL World Championship Game, until the merger was completed in 1970. Following the merger, each league became a "conference," whose championship team would then compete in the game, which we know as the Super Bowl! While, tonight across the nation, many will be rooting for either team-- the Green Bay Packers v. the Pittsburg Steelers--, everyone will be watching the games' famed commercials, that are notable for their extremely high viewership. As one website stated, "Super Bowl Sunday is prom night for ad agencies, where it doesn't really matter whose arm you show up on as long as your night is memorable." In fact, due to the high viewership, the price of commercial airtime during the Super Bowl broadcast is the most expensive throughout the year. While the commercials are A) amazing, B) fabulous and C) super amazing and fabulous, they were not closed captioned and therefore difficult to understand! I found it, sometimes, impossible to follow the ad's plots when they were not captioned. That is until ... THIS YEAR! Hey!!!
Boo!!!! That was kinda meant to scare you! No, I am not mean, but -- HAPPY APRIL FOOLS DAY!!!!!! Oh-kay, now that that is out of the way, I want to introduce you to a new show, "My Deaf Family!" With the abundance of reality shows in recent years -- i.e. "Top Chef", "Rock of Love" and "America's Next Top Model" -- it is a wonder that there has yet to have been a show about families who are deaf / hoh. Well, now that is all about to CHANGE! Recently, film actress Marlee Matlin (You know her from "Children of a Lesser God" and "Desperate Housewives") hosted the debut of the new reality show "My Deaf Family," which premiered on YouTube. Hey!!!
I am BACK of course with the latest in my HowTos!!!! Sorry, it is kinda late! Actually, this is my last How-To, unless I think that in the future, something necessary for a How-To. So, lets change that sentence, this is my last HowTo for sometime. I will bring it back later on ... As promised, I have written about the iPod and the cell phone, but I have not written about the TV!!! How many of you watch TV - yeah I know that is a stupid question? How many of turn the TV's volume up too loud, to the point where family and friends are screaming at you to lower the volume (or you want to raise the volume to that level???)??? Besides, did you know that one common way to tell whether you have a hearing loss is the level that you raise your TV's volume? Of course, none of us are contesting whether you have a hearing loss because we all do!!! :) Oh-kay, lets get down to business ... Hey! So, have you ever been on a plane ride where you are tired of looking at the clouds, trying to figure out whether it looks like Abe Lincoln or a bunny rabbit? Then you look at your watch and realize you still have three hours sitting cramped in your seat? Well, unfortunately I do not really know what it is like to fly, so to me that would be luxurious (I can't fly because I lose my hearing - hence the reason, I have a hearing loss, so instead I take boats, cars and trains.) Yet, I completely understand this situation ... On a plane, you can watch a movie. Correct? On a plane, you can, or I guess you HAVE to, watch the safety video. Correct? Have you ever noticed that the safety videos are all caption, yet most of the time, the regular entertainment, that saves you from your boredom, are not? Today, February, 24, 2010, the AARP (... or the Association for Airline Passenger Rights) asked the US Department of Transportation to require all Commercial Air Carriers (... Delta, United Airlines, American Airlines) to provide captioning/subtitles on all movies and TV shows, so that we (passengers who are deaf and HOH) can hear EVERYTHING! Currently, the Department of Transportation (... or DOT) already require captioning on SAFETY related videos. (of course, isn't it dangerous for us to be bored? - bad joke - lol!!!) So ... basically this is all leading up to ... In order to make sure that all videos have subtitles/captions, there is currently an online petition in support of the requirement at http://www.petitionspot.com/petitions/subtitles/. The goal is to get 10,000 signatures and 63, at this moment - wait no, 64 (with me), have signed so far. Please Comment - Here are some ideas: What do you think? Are you/ Did you vote? What accomodation do you make sure you have when you fly? Does flying hurt your ears? Do any of you lose permanent hearing, like me, from flying (I have never met another person!)? Love, bf4life-hearing Hey!!! So in the spirit of the holiday season ... Who doesn't love HULU??? I know I do!!! Not only does Hulu show tv shows online for FREE, it has CAPTIONING!!!!!!!! As I cannot seem to watch a show without captioning, this is a great feature! Yet, Hulu has just added something interesting to their website. In addition to having captioning, one can now search the captioning of thousands of videos to find the memorable moment, jump straight to the punch line or go directly to where you stopped the show. So if the fact that you cannot hear the last line is making watching a show from a certain point, difficult because you do not know the last line, then you can now search the last line. To use Captions Search, select the "Captions" tab that appears under the video you're watching and enter a word or phrase into the Captions Search box. From those results, you can hover over the thumbnaill images on the leaf to preview the video, or click on a result to start playing the video from that point. This tool has helped me sooooooooooo much and I definitely suggest using it!!!!!!!!! Also, don't forget to watch all your favorite holiday movies on Hulu using this cool tip! Love, bf4life-hearing P.S. Here is the link ... http://www.hulu.com/labs/captions-searchweeblylink_new_window |
